SAFODA is a statutory
body enacted by the Sabah State Government
in 1976 to carry out the reforestation
of denuded lands and wastelands, establish
and manage sustainable forest plantations
for the supply of industrial wood to the
timber industry, as well as bring socio-economic
development to these areas through the
participation of local people in forest
reforestation, harvesting and timber processing
activities.
SAFODA's objectives are:

establish large scale commercial plantation
for the production of timber and other
wood products |

To
rehabilitate wastelands for productive
use |

To
restore and maintain the environment
through reforestation activities |

To
carry out research and development
activities in relation to forest plantation
techniques and to generate income
from R&D projects |

promote the active participation of
the private sector in forest plantation
and/or downstream activities |

To
uplift the socio-economic status of
the local rural inhabitants, and |
|
To
develop the expertise of SAFODA's
employees in forest industry through
education and on the job training |

SAFODA
has developed an area of 17,000 ha of mainly
Acacia Mangium plantations in the Bengkoka
Peninsula, and implemented numerous reforestation
projects on denuded and grassland areas
in Kudat, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Keningau
and Beaufort. The authority has provided
assistance to farmers in the area in developing
private tree farms or woodlots for commercial
purpose, and has also established a Research
Center in Kinarut for the purpose of carrying
out research in tree growing techniques. |

 On
19 December 2003, MIB and TCSB entered into a
joint-venture wherein MIB shall solely supply
Acacia Mangium pulp logs from its concession located
in Pitas, Sabah, while TCSB shall build and operate
a woodchip mill and subsequently sell the final
product. In addition, MIB is also entitled to
30% of the net profit derived from the sale of
wood chips.
The
objective of the Wood Chip mill is primarily to
produce first grade paper pulp wood chips for
the pulp industries located in countries including
but not limited to Japan. The plant will ensure
that the wood chips in size and cutting characteristic
suit the requirement of the international pulp
industry, hence attracting foreign buyers looking
for high quality wood chips and in general boost
the region’s reputation as being one of
the prime supplier for first grade wood chips. |
